How durable is the mouse pad? How solid/sturdy is the connection between the USB connector and the pad? How does this pad compare in durability to standard mouse pads? If bent will internal mechanism get damaged easily? Is it rigid for working on your lap?

First, I don't know what "mouse pad" you're talking about... And what other "mouse pad" you are comparing it to.. Do you mean the iGesture? In terms of durability of the surface and cable, they are pretty much identical. And you shouldn't go bending it over your knee, but it is quite durable. There is no reinforcment on the USB cable, but it is still fine. You just shouldn't plan on abusing one of these, but it will last with normal use.

The surface of the iGesture is not baked or anodized like many of the available high-end gaming surfaces (eXactMat, Ultra-Mat, RatpadzGS). That said, the pad surface is sensitive to cosmetic mars, particularly as a result of topical grit and particles introduced by the fingers and settling dust. Note that the foam backing attracts dust quite readily as well. Keep the product sleeved when toting it around. The iGesture is certainly rigid enough for lap use.
