View Full Version : Installer hangs on Mac OS X

The MultiTouch Utilities installer hangs on Mac OS X 10.3 at about 90% completed. I have tried to get it to work with a newly created account just to see whether it could be a conflict, but it still hangs. I have tried the old version on the CD, but also the current 1.4 version, no difference.
As a consequence I can't apply the patches, use the MultiTouch tools or XWinder.
I contacted FingerWorks support via the web form (why not provide an email address?) two weeks ago and I still haven't had any response!?
Anybody else having this problem?

Frank,
We replied to someone else about this a couple weeks ago but have no record of your support request (the email is support@fingerworks.com but this sort of problem is best solved collectively through the forum).
A few Mac OS X customers have been experiencing installer hangs but we haven't been able to reproduce it. Must be something particular to certain systems or Java installations but we don't know what yet. One customer got around it with another Mac OS X install on a clean partition.

Ok. So you are aware of the problem.
If you want me to run a debug version of your installer I will. My system is a vanilla installation of 10.3 with all updates applied.
BTW
The XP installer works fine but cannot update the firmware on the device..

Version 1.4.2 does not solve the hanging problem..

Frank,
We will look into providing you a debug version of the installer, but the installer is actually a third party application. The forums have proved quite useful in the past in narrowing down these system-dependent problems as other people with the problem report in and tell us about their system configuration. It would be helpful if you either posted your system profile or emailed it privately to support@fingerworks.com
Can you describe the Win XP firmware update problem? The most common issue there is that people fail to approve the DFU driver install wizard. If you try another USB port you'll get another chance to approve the DFU driver.

I would be happy to run the test installer for you and have just mailed you my system profile. I have the development tools installed so you may want to try that at your end.
I was able to sort out the XP problem by unplugging all other devices.
Thanks for your time.

I've tried running the setupfw142 installer several times with the same results: it gets to the license agreement screen; I accept and click 'Next' (see the screen shot attached); app crashes with "...application setupfw142 has unexpectedly quit..." dialog.
I am using OSX 10.3.4; Java v. 1.4.2; firmware version 1.4 on both a Touchstream LP and a MacNTouch.
I just e-mailed my system profile to Fingerworks support.

The symptoms with my installer problem are different: it hangs well before the license agreement appears.
I have managed to install the tools on my powerbook and copy the files over, that seems to work ok so far...

Further to the installer issue:
I ran the setupfw142 installer on another machine, and it installed successfully. I then copied the files over to the original machine and was able to upgrade the firmware on the MacNTouch keyboard.
The machine with the successful install was a 350mhz iMac running MacOSX 10.2.8; Java 1.4.1. It never had any version of the Fingerworks utilities on it prior to this.
The original (unsuccessful) machine was a Powerbook G4 running 10.3.4 and Java 1.4.2.
Same problem as sunray, same solution here. I am also losing functionality every few minutes and the only solution is a replug. OS X 10.3.4 PowerBook 12" 1.33 GHz. LP

Guys,
Please try out the following package built with a newer (demo) version of InstallAnywhere and let us know if it runs OK:
(Demo version removed...it didn't help.)

I'm having the same problem as sunray. The installer unexpectedly quits after the License agreement screen.
I've tried the new Installer (demo version) and the same thing happens.
I'm running OS X 10.3.4, java version "1.4.2_03".
Tried the new installer, same problem with one new highlight. The installer says it is "unlicenced" and to contact the maker about a licence.

Guess we won't be contacting them for a license since the newer version doesn't fix the problem :)
If the rest of you can send in the (exported .txt) version of your System Profiles we will look through them all. Did you all have Java 1.3 installed previously (i.e. did you upgrade from Jaguar or was Panther a fresh install?)

Guys,
Try the v1.42_01 packages just posted thru the normal download page. We explicitly told the installer to use Java 1.4+ instead of Java 1.3.1 for its unpacking. See if that helps.
The song remains the same, for me at least....

The version available from the downloads page appears to be the same as before (setupfw142.zip). I removed those files from the IAInstaller directory before trying.
And yes, it crashed after the license screen.

Same situation here trying the "new" download.
End up with the same setupfw142 file as before; crashes after accepting license.
As answer to the question about the fresh vs upgrade from Jaguar install, mine was an upgrade to Panther.
